FSO had good plans for Polonez. Factory bought project from FIAT. Designed by Giorgio Giugiaro, the same guy who draw famous lancia delta. Italians designed this car for American market - with their tough safety rules in these days. This is nice looking hatchback. The bad points are chassis and engines from FSO 125p. You need to now, that was temporary solution - but in reality of communism country temporary solutions last forever . Production of polonez in that shape, with old engines and chassis was planed for couple years. The target was change the chassis, and produce car with range of modern engines: two petrol and one 2 liter diesel. And then Polish people in Solidarity started dismantling eastern bloc, causes 80's crisis and end of communism in Europe. Thats why Polonez had this bad performance till end of production. The engine bay in this car is big. Some of polonez's came with fiats 2 liter twin-cam. In 90's some polonez's was equipped with engines from ford (2.0 petrol), Peugeot (1.9 diesel) and rover (1.4i petrol). Last pic shows polonez coupe - very rare and expensive. No one knows how many of them exactly was produced, not more than 100.

When I bought my first 125p in 1988, at service time the dealer had a loan car Polonez. Was a blue 1.5 top spec model with weller 8 spoke wheels. I have a remote control FSO Polonez in my Eastern Bloc toys collection.
