Alan asked me to do a write up on this car.
I used to own this car. I bought the maroon Lada 1.5E off some banger racers for £250.
It proved to be an unreliable pig & so after a month I sold the car to my friend Paul Sherwood.
Paul gave me my £250 back & repaired the running faults.
Once cured, Paul used the car as a daily user, commuting 40 miles to work on the USAAF base at Lakenheath Suffolk.
Paul joined the Lada owners Club.
Not long after, the BBC contacted the LOC to ask if anyone local to the Lotus factory owned a Lada & wouldn't mind letting then loose on their car.
Paul was contacted & agreed to let them loose on his Lada.
He delivered his car to the Lotus Factory at Hethel near Norwich & left it with them for 6 months.
When he got it back the transformation was amazing.
Metallic black with silver detailing.
No bumpers.
Lotus Elise wheels with Yokahama tyres.
Uprated brakes.
Koni dampers.
Full retrim in black & red inside.
Fiat Twin Cam engine & 5 speed box.
Re-geared differential
Lowered all round.
Etc etc.
This is the BBC Top Gear programme that featured Lotus Lada 001.

Paul debut the car at the IFA day at Stanford Hall in 2005.
A fast car capable of 130MPH as proved on the A14.
Shortly afterwards the car started to play up.
Unreliablility was the word. Starting was difficult.
Components broke. Things came loose etc.
The wide wheels made short work of cutting through the brake flexis.
The Yokahama tyres wore out in no time.
MPG was frightening & Insurance was hard to get & hideously expensive.
So the car was sold to a German Lotus collector for £7000.
